Decimal Introduction - Machin Portrait Era (1967-1985)

The inaugural circulating coinage of the decimal New Zealand Dollar (NZD) introduced to replace the pound system. This classic batch features large-format, heavy cupro-nickel and bronze denominations. All coins display the youthful first decimal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, designed by Arnold Machin.

National Coinage - Maklouf Portrait Era (1986-1998)

This era features the elegant second decimal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf, capturing the monarch with formal royal regalia. A significant expansion occurred within this batch in 1990, when low-value paper currency was officially phased out in favor of the iconic aluminum-bronze 1 Dollar (Kiwi) and 2 Dollars (Kotuku) coins.

4
Late Standard - Rank-Broadley Series

The initial phase of the third decimal obverse redesign, showcasing Ian Rank-Broadley’s mature and realistic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This short-lived batch preserves the traditional, heavy physical specifications of the 1967 monetary standard before the global metal market pressures forced a dimensional overhaul.
