These early issues are unique for bearing the simple inscription "DEUTSCHLAND" instead of the later official state name. Featuring designs of wheat stalks and gears, these coins—mostly minted in aluminum and small amounts of brass-clad steel—symbolize the industrial and agricultural focus of the Soviet occupation zone.
